No basement here. (In Houston, we don’t do basements.) Also no deck. But we have multiple rooms with insufficient natural light, so anytime I need to work on something that requires flipping the breaker to “off”, I grab an LED light source from my absurd accumulation of such devices.
@werehatrack Seems like I read somewhere on the verified part of the internet that the Houston Ship Channel was the result of someone attempting adding a basement to their house plans. It just kept filling with water.
I’d use mine in the daylight to find one good, honest man.
For those of you unfamiliar with the reference: Ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes of Sinope was a Cynic who famously wandered Athens in daylight holding a lit lantern. When asked why, he replied, “I am looking for an honest man” (or “a human being”), symbolizing his search for virtue in a society he saw as superficial, corrupt, and lacking integrity.
However, Diogenes lived in a barrel and rejected wealth, power, and social conventions - so what did he know.
@hugacrv I used to belong to a science club as an adolescent. We would to go spelunking with a carbide lamp. We had batteries back then too but it was cool to do it the old timey way

Finding the light switch in a new house.
Working in a dark space (ie: under the sink)
Walking the property after dark.
Some of the above, plus others.

Trying to find where the Cat hid during the nite!
@mycya4me The night of July 4th?
I’d use two to light the way for my barouche carrying me to my manor house.

@mediocrebot Whoa, my house isn’t on fire is it?
A gift. Everyone can use another portable light, right?
@hchavers Brilliant!

I briefly rented a room from a woman whose husband used to work for the state and part of his job was doing cave exploring and mapping.
Most of the above.
I tore out my deck, and the rest of the yard, two summers ago.
Feeding my horses at 5pm in December in the great white north. Well, almost.
@HorseyB
To avoid being eaten by a grue.
Obviously.
Pass, got a slightly more skookum one with probably mostly same internals for $15 on death star at Costco
